How to Join a Group Social Story

Overview

This social story developed by ASERT explains how to join a group of people.

A group of people is standing together and talking

When I see a group of people talking, I may want to join them.

A man is excited to join the group

But first, I need to make sure that it is okay to join the group.

The man says

They may not want me to join their group, and that is okay.

The man stands away from the group and listens to what they're talking about

I start by standing back and listening to what they are talking about.

The man looks at a man in the group and smiles

I make eye contact with someone in the group and smile.

The man smiles and shows interest in the group

This shows that I am friendly and interested in what they are talking about.

The man smiles and walks to the group

I walk up to the group.

The man waits for a pause in the conversation

I wait for a pause in the conversation before I say anything.

The man says

When there is a pause, I ask if they mind if I join the group.

The man says

If they say I can join, I smile and say “Thank you.”

The man waves and joins the group

I should introduce myself and say “Hi” to the group members.

A girl in the group says

If they say I cannot join, I smile, say “Okay,” and walk away.
