Working On My Independence

Posted on

Welcome back! In this blog, I’m going to be sharing what I’ve been working on to hopefully gain the skills to live independently someday. Here are some of the things I’ve been working on:

I have been attending therapy so that I can continue to work on myself and improve my self-esteem. I’ve been working on things like setting boundaries and practicing positive affirmations. I’ve also been learning what medication I need and take so that I can eventually be able to self-administer.

Since I live in a group home, the staff provide the meals for the individuals who live in the homes. However, since I am working on my independent living skills, I am able to pick out a recipe each week so that I can cook it. It definitely helps so when the time comes for me to transition on my own, I’ll know how to prepare a meal. Additionally, I do my own laundry and I make sure I’m taking good care of myself. And while I’ve made a lot of improvements, there’s still a lot to learn. But that’s okay!

I am very hopeful for my future. While I do still get nervous, I know that I have made a lot of improvements and I have a wonderful support team to help guide me along the way. Change is scary, but it can also be a good thing. And as long as you believe in yourself and you take action, with hard work, anything is possible. Remember, never ever give up!

I hope that I was able to inspire someone in this blog. Thank you so much for reading this month’s blog. See you in the next one!

Teresa is in her early 20s and looking forward to blogging about her journey with newly diagnosed autism. Within the past few years, she’s had to rebuild her entire life from scratch and navigate everything very differently. She recently had the opportunity to job shadow at different locations and has been inspired to attend college and one day work with children. Teresa is eager for this new chapter in her life and wants to inspire others with autism to never give up, despite whatever obstacles life may throw their way.
