Makeup, fashion, sports, cooking, and so many other hobbies often have one thing in common – They’re meant for everyone regardless of your sex/age. Growing up, I loved Barbie, but I wasn’t all into fashion and makeup like my mom and sister are. I’m still not into makeup and barely wear it, and my idea of fashion is two things: comfort and feeling like myself. But I also remember watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, and Transformers as a kid, especially with my cousins, and we’d have a TV marathon with snacks/drinks and even play with the action figures together all the time.
Just because you’re a girl doesn’t automatically mean you’re into makeup, fashion, or that you don’t like watching football, or hate getting dirty. And just because you’re a boy, it doesn’t automatically mean you’re into sports, cars, or action figures. Hobbies and skills aren’t meant for just one gender group; they’re meant for everyone. Heck, my mom is great with tools, especially when it comes to painting and fixing stuff. And my dad’s a fan of watching Hot N Cleveland with me, loves cuddling with our cats at night, and giving them treats. Sure, my sister likes makeup and jewelry more than me, but when it comes to tools, she’s just as skilled as Mom. And yes, I’m still learning certain things, but I’ve gotten good at some self-defense, tried my hand at shooting at a gun range, using tools, cooking, and so on.
You should never limit yourself because of your gender, your age, or any limitations you may have. Sure, it’s scary to start at times, and you might worry if you’ll mess up, but honestly, the more you mess up, the faster you’ll learn. I started learning to crochet when I was around 8 or 9 years old, and one of my younger cousins said I learned a grandma skill. But ‘grandma skill’ or not, what I remember is feeling happy to be enjoying myself and relaxing.
I’m 26 years old and know how to drive; I know basic self-defense skills; I am currently learning new cooking skills and how to play chess. When I was younger and after I learned more about having autism, I was hesitant to try new things because I was afraid of failing, but I think I was just afraid of hearing, “I told you she couldn’t do it” or “Why did she even bother trying?” But if I can learn how to cook, to make payments, to drive, to defend myself, and not be afraid to speak my mind, then I can do anything! And even though I’ve been crocheting since I was around eight years old and have been improving every time I start a new project. I can make stuffed animals that are so adorable 🙂
And you all know I LOVED Barbie growing up, but I was (and still am) a fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers, Transformers, crocheting, horror movies, and some video games. Your gender, age, or abilities should not define your interests or skills as a person.
That’s all I’ve got for now; see ya next time!!
