The Goldbergs: A Look into the Past

Posted on

The Goldbergs is a funny comedy about a typical family in the 1980’s with most of the episodes revolving around the childhood of Adam F Goldberg and his family.

Me and my family always enjoy watching the show, laughing at how similar their family is to ours. (Not every family is like Hallmark). Our family yells, makes jokes, laughs at each other. We have our moments. But we also support each other and help each other out when we can and that’s what makes a good family in my opinion.

But also, since it’s set in the 1980’s, I also get a glimpse at how my parents grew up. It’s a fun look at the fashion, technology, music, and cars. There is one episode called “Crazy Calls” where the dad, Murray Goldberg, bought an answering machine and used the scripted message from the instruction book, “Hello. You’ve reached the answering machine of the Goldberg Residence. We either are unavailable or unable to get to the phone at the moment, but we would appreciate it if you would leave your name, telephone number, business, the person you’re calling for and the time you called after you hear the beep. And we will be sure to get back to you at our earliest convenience”. Mom laughed and said, “That’s exactly how my dad did the answering machine message when we got an answering machine!”

My parents also love the references to the classic movies and remembering how excited they were to see them come out in theaters, the references to things like the Coca-Cola Wars when the company changed their recipe and everyone was NOT pleased, the failed Atari ET game, the royal wedding, and Pac man. I get to learn more about their past without asking so many questions (I’m a curious kitty, lol).

I could go on forever because I’m a history nut and love learning about the past, but I’ll cut to the chase. My point is that The Goldbergs was a show that had something for EVERYONE in my family, classic movie references, comedy, mild family drama, and nostalgia. If you haven’t watched it, give it a chance!

The kids in the series remind me of me, my sister, and our cousins. I really love the show because of how relatable it is. In my experience, family can drive you a little nuts, but will always be there for you, even in ways you least expect them to be.

That’s all I’ve got for now!

Until next time,

Sarah
