October Art Challenge

Posted on

One of my favorite hobbies is to draw. I don’t get to do it that often since it requires space and time to concentrate, which are both hard to come by. I get frustrated at not being able to draw what I’m thinking of, and it kind of becomes a problem-solving session where I try to figure out a way to do what I want. Once I finish drawing, I’m very happy I did it, even if I have no real way to show it off. I draw for me, and very rarely for others.

A good way to get back into the swing of drawing something daily is to do a challenge in October. Some people call it Inktober, others Artober, and even others make their own name for it, but the basic premise is the same for all. Every day in October has a prompt for you to make something based on. It doesn’t have to be a drawing; it can be any craft. Some challenges do a prompt every few days or every week, so you can pick one that’s at a pace you like. I like to scroll through all the prompt lists and pick whichever one speaks to me.

It can be really hard for me to complete this challenge. I often give up halfway through the month, which is really frustrating and upsetting to me. I really want to complete it this year, and so far, I’ve done a great job at keeping pace. I’ve already had to do multiple prompts in one day, but I try not to beat myself up for forgetting a day or so. Sometimes life gets in the way. I can be busy with work or chores and not really have time to do it. I also have a hard time thinking of what to do with some prompts, which makes it challenging but also fun.

Kel

Kel (they/them) is in their late 20’s and didn’t learn of their autism until their second year of college. This helped them get the tools they needed to graduate on time but also gave them a sense of community. A lot of their early life was given more context. Now, they work as a self-advocate, helping other people just like them. They like to play video games, board games, write, draw, act, and cosplay in their spare time. They also are fond of their family pets; four dogs and a cat.
