How I Started DnD and Why I Kept Going!

I love board games, so moving to tabletop roleplaying games wasn’t that far off. Sure, it involves more writing and math, but it is its own brand of fun! Of course, one of the the most famous and widely played game is Dungeons and Dragons. I’ve been playing with my group for many months now, so I thought sharing my experience might help others gauge their interest.

We all came in with our own characters. Our DM (Dungeon Master) was eager to help me make my character, and I found lots of resources online to help as well. It made it even more fun to make her a changeling sorcerer. She has quite a backstory, and our DM ended up inserting it into our campaign in a way that surprised me. My character started out taking a job for money and ended up making lots of friends along the way. People would join and leave our group, and a character even died! The entire time, we all had tons of fun telling our story together.

A special thing about our group is that we are all autistic! It’s nice being with people like you, doing something you all enjoy together. I feel very lucky to have met and joined this group! I have tried to play before, but the group was cancelled. Having a reliable group of people to meet every other weekend has helped me feel better about myself. It gives me something to look forward to.

We are nearing the end of this campaign, and our DM will switch to another member soon. I’m excited to see where the story goes! I’m also worried, because as of writing my character has low health and I don’t want her to die. Having that threat of harm makes the story more thrilling, though, so it’s a necessary evil.

Kel (they/them) is in their late 20’s and didn’t learn of their autism until their second year of college. This helped them get the tools they needed to graduate on time, but also gave them a sense of community. A lot of their early life was given more context. Now, they work as a self-advocate, helping other people just like them. They like to play video games, board games, write, draw, act, and cosplay in their spare time. They also are fond of their family pets; three dogs and a cat.
