All The Fish in The Sea

Posted on
I’m sure everyone knows the classic saying “There are plenty of fish in the sea.” Well, one night me and my family were watching a new mini Pixar series called Win or Lose and there was a narrator kid who said something that really caught my attention: “There are many fish in the sea, choose wisely.” And it made me realize something, there are plenty of fish in the sea, but not ALL fish are edible.
Basically, it’s like survival in my eyes. You have to be cautious of things around you 24/7 and make smart decisions, otherwise you’ll end up with a hook in your mouth and on your way to a seafood restaurant waiting to be eaten. This is basically another way of telling someone to be careful when you’re unsure about something, or to not give into peer pressure. To me, this saying is just a reminder to make smart decisions and to think clearly about certain decisions you’re about to make. For example, let’s say you want to call off from work (take a personal day). After all, needing a mental health day every now and then is understandable. But DON’T overdo it! Also, make thoughtful purchases, not impulsive ones. Treating yourself every now and then is fine, but again, DON’T overdo it!
Some days I feel a shark swimming around my head saying, “you deserve a treat” or “take the day off” or even, “just one more episode and then we’ll go to bed.”
And yes, while I’d love to call off work and enjoy the day now and then, I have to be responsible and dependable at work so they can trust me as both a person and employee. If I call off too much, they might feel they can’t rely on me to be on their team, and that wouldn’t be good.
Anyway, I really liked the message in that episode because it made me remember I have to be wise in my decisions, big or small. And that if you get carried away with treating yourself, you’ll eventually be left with almost nothing to look forward to when you and your family have a fun shopping day (because you spent all your money!) It’s also a smart analogy on who you should trust in your social circle. Not all “fish” are what they appear to be. If someone has tattoos, it doesn’t mean they are dangerous. If they wear glasses, it won’t make them a genius.
There are a lot of decisions out there….all day long you have choices to make. You need to rationalize and choose wisely, and maybe don’t judge a fish by its scales.
Fun fact: I do NOT like fish, not even fish sticks. But as a kid, I LOVED Finding Nemo!
Until next time,
