VIRTUAL September: 30 Days of Hunger Action

September is hunger action month. Join them to learn how you can make a difference and check out their weekly orange plate challenge!

About this event

Every community has families that experience hunger, maybe even the neighbors. Join them each week to learn more about food insecurity, how they can help others, and savvy ways to make meals on a budget. In addition, during these classes they’ll strive to raise awareness even more by making delicious and affordable dishes featuring the color of hunger action month – orange! See class topics and schedule below.

You can earn 50 Choice Points for each class that you attend in September. Customer must provide GIANT/Martins CARD number upon registration. Attendance to class is required to receive points. Please allow up to 14 business days to see points loaded in your account. Also…

Win a Pantry Makeover!

Each class attended in September will automatically earn 1 entry into a Pantry Makeover Sweepstakes. Three grand prizes will be awarded consisting of a virtual pantry makeover session conducted by a GIANT Company nutritionist and a customized grocery order to stock your pantry, value up to $150. Customer must provide GIANT/MARTIN’S CARD number upon registration. Attendance to class is required to receive entry. Multiple entries allowed per household and the attending adult for children’s classes will receive 1 entry. For official rules, please reach out to their Nutritionists. Open to legal residents of MD, VA, PA, or WV, eighteen or older. The GIANT Company employees and their immediate families are not eligible to enter or win.


September 7 at 12pm: Food Insecurity with Holly

Hunger is closer than we think, likely someone we know is struggling to put food on the table. Join Nutritionist, Holly Doan, as we explore what food insecurity looks like in our communities and how we can make a difference. We’ll be crafting a delicious and affordable whipped orange sweet potato recipe to share.

Ingredients/Supplies for Whipped Orange Sweet Potatoes:

  • 4 sweet potatoes
  • 1/2 stick unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 orange
  • 1/3 cup light cream
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 large eggs
  • Supplies: 9×9 baking dish or ramekins, spoon/fork, mixing bowl, electric mixer, knife, measuring utensils, aluminum foil


September 14 at 12pm: Pay it Forward with Shanna

A simple act of kindness can mean the world to someone else, especially when that gesture revolves around something as sacred as nourishment. During this session one of their nutritionists, Shanna, will walk through some ideas of how you can “pay it forward” in your community and onto others with groceries dollars, food, and fun fall recipes like pumpkin chocolate chip cookies.

Ingredients/Supplies for Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies:

  • 2 ½ cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 stick butter, softened
  • 1 package chocolate chips
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ cup sugar
  • 1, 15 oz. can GIANT 100% pumpkin
  • 1 egg
  • Supplies: Mixer or bowl with beaters, measuring cups and spoons , baking sheet, parchment paper

September 21 at 12pm: Eating Healthy on a Budget with Jennifer

Eating healthy foods doesn’t have to be expensive. Join Nutritionist Jennifer Schmiel, RD, LDN to learn how to make the most of your food dollars. They will finish up the class by making a homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte.

Ingredients/Supplies for Pumpkin Spice Latte:

  • 2 cups dark brewed coffee or espresso
  • 1 ½ cups milk of choice
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 4 tablespoons pumpkin puree (canned pumpkin)
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Supplies: Saucepan, whisk or spoon, measuring cups & spoons, blender


September 28 at 12pm: $6 Meal Inspiration with Taylor

Eat great and save more with Nutritionist Taylor Guskind, RD, LDN as we make zesty butternut squash tacos. Get more bang for your buck with these nutritious, loaded tacos ringing in at under $6 for four servings.

Ingredients/Supplies for Butternut Squash Tacos:

  • 8 corn tortillas (Guerrero white corn tortillas 30 count)
  • 1 package GIANT butternut squash frozen cubes
  • 1, 15 oz. can GIANT black beans (low sodium)
  • 1, 16 oz. container GIANT thick & chunky salsa (mild, medium, or hot)
  • 2 ½ cups GIANT shredded red cabbage
  • 1 bunch fresh cilantro
  • 1 cup GIANT long grain brown rice (cooked)
  • 2 tablespoons GIANT 100% Lime Juice from Concentrate
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon GIANT chili powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Supplies: sheet pan, colander, measuring cups/spoons, cutting board, knife
