Comic Book Creation After School Program

The Society, Incorporated Howard County Chapter presents our first Comic Creation After School Program.

About this Event

Comic books have been a staple of American culture for over 70 years. Comics have this unique ability to transport readers into an entirely different world, where anything is possible and people /characters can be whoever they want to be. This online after school program introduces student participants to the basic principles of creative writing, and intersectional literary criticism through the creation of fanfiction. Comic books have been published for over a hundred years and yet in 2020, many comics continue to present gender and racial stereotypes in storylines and/or minimize the struggles of marginalized characters by not discussing how society and institutions continue to suppress those in marginalized racial and gender communities. It is useful to students to create their own comic book narratives because it not only gives them the opportunity to critique stories, but it also allows them to practice writing inclusive, alternative narratives. Students will learn or enhance their creative writing and art skills. By the end of the program, students will have completed a short story comic book. The workshop is also free!!!!Students in grades 8th-12th are welcome to register. The program will run for six sessions between March 17th to May 26th 2021. Classes will always start at 3:30pm and end at 4:30pm. If you have any further questions, please email them at info@societyhoco.org.
