The Nickelodeon Documentary and My Feelings About It

Posted on

Hello everyone, for this month’s blog post I am writing about the recent Nickelodeon documentary and my thoughts about it. I’ve decided to write about this topic solely because I have a lot of thoughts about it and I think I should share them with all of you. Now just for the record, I am only talking about my feelings, I’m not going too deep into the details or writing a summary about the scandal.

Back in the 1990’s and early 2000’s, Nickelodeon was in its heyday. If you are a millennial like me, you grew up watching such shows like The Amanda Show, Drake and Josh and iCarly. In March 2024, there was a documentary that came out called Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV. This talked about a variety of issues that went on at the Nickelodeon network. If you haven’t seen the docuseries yet, I will not be going into details to spoil it.

Again, this post is not meant to be a summary of the scandal. No, instead I am only stating my feelings. I do not want to talk about every little detail of the scandal because I don’t want to make anyone depressed nor do I want to be bummed out. Anyway, after watching this documentary, it kind of changed my whole perspective of how I see my childhood shows. The stories from some of the former stars made me feel shocked and appalled. I had no idea at the time they were going through trauma while filming these shows. I was just a kid at the time so I didn’t have the mindset to think, “Hey, that doesn’t seem right”. When you’re a kid you don’t really think much about what’s really going on in every show. Now that I’m older and I look back at them, it’s like Wow, that’s inappropriate for a children’s tv show. I think the one thing that bothers me the most was the fact that those child stars had to endure horrific experiences that they shouldn’t have had to go through. The children should have been protected and they weren’t and that is the bottom line. My whole opinion about this whole scandal is summarized in one word and that would be “disturbing.” It makes me rethink how I feel about how I view the network. Now that I am an adult, it feels awkward to watch them again. How can I watch those shows again knowing what went on? Now I am re-evaluating things and I shouldn’t have to in the first place. All I feel is empathy for those kids and what they went through. I hope a very powerful lesson comes out of this story. Hollywood needs to learn a lesson about the way they treat their child actors and do a better job protecting them. There has never been a federal law protecting child actors from predators that I know of and I think there should more. I also wish that there were background checks.

The scandal is trending all over the internet with more details and actors coming out with their stories of what it was like working for Nickelodeon. This really does change the way we view the network and I think there is going to be some sort of impact that will come of that.
